We’ve all heard about the pitfalls of cell phones and other handheld devices. Whether it’s feelings of FOMO from spending too much time on social media or losing hours of the day scrolling. These devices can be great, but they have downsides. One downside that doesn’t always get much attention is tech neck.
At Motion Medical Center, we offer care for tech neck so you don’t have to live in constant pain and discomfort. With the help of our team and state-of-the-art treatments, we can ease your pain and help you get back to living your life.
Tech neck explained
Also known as text neck, tech neck can occur when you spend too much time looking down at your phone or other electronic devices. When the head is upright in a neutral position it weighs about 10 to 12 pounds. However, leaning as little as 15 degrees forward can increase it to 27 pounds. That number goes up to 49 and 60 pounds at 45 and 60 degrees respectively. This can cause serious issues to your neck.
Looking down, while holding the device at your chest, can result in damage to your neck muscles. As well as the rounding forward of your shoulders. Eventually, this can lead to the compression of nerves between the neck and shoulder and cause herniated discs, arthritis, disc degeneration, and more.
Symptoms of tech neck
A stiff or painful neck is one of the main symptoms but not the only one. Shoulder pain can also occur as well as headaches. Some people may experience a sensation of tingling or numbness in their thumbs due to the pinching of nerves going down the arms to the fingers.
Tech neck treatment
The good news is treatment can ease tech neck. Standing in a neutral position and keeping muscles relaxed can help, so can holding the device at eye level, looking down with your eyes instead of your head. Just make sure you’re taking frequent breaks. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t always need to be staring at your phone or computer.
Chiropractic care can also help relieve pain and restore proper alignment to the vertebrae. The key is to strengthen and correct your posture so you can heal and prevent future issues.
