What is cold laser?

Cold laser, also called low-level laser therapy, is a type of medical laser that uses light energy to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain in joints and soft tissues. It’s called cold laser because it doesn’t heat up your skin or cut through tissues, like hot surgical lasers. Cold laser therapy is noninvasive and painless, but reaches deeper than other types of noninvasive treatments, like heat, ice, or electrical stimulation, in order to provide pain relief deep in your joints and muscles.

How does cold laser work?

At Motion Medical Center, the team uses the Erchonia® cold laser, the first cold laser to be FDA cleared for treatment. The Erchonia handheld device emits light energy at certain frequencies that penetrate through your skin to reach a depth of 3-5 centimeters. This is the level where your joints, including muscles, ligaments, and tendons, can be found underneath your skin. The light energy is absorbed by specific types of cells that use the light to trigger cellular healing responses.

Cellular healing responses are used to reduce inflammation and swelling in a joint, which, in turn, relieves pain. Cold laser treatments take 5-10 minutes and can provide lasting relief from joint and soft tissue discomfort.

What conditions does cold laser help?

Since cold laser doesn’t irritate or injure skin, it can be used on many different areas of the body safely. Conditions that can benefit from cold laser therapy include:

  • Shoulder pain
  • Knee pain
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Chronic joint and muscle pain

Cold laser therapy can also work with regenerative medicine products to speed up the natural healing process in injured or chronically painful joints and soft tissues.

What does cold laser feel like?

The Erchonia cold laser doesn’t emit any heat, vibrations, or other sensations, so all you feel during treatment is gentle pressure from the handheld laser device against your skin. Your provider gives you protective eyeglasses to wear during treatment to avoid eye irritation from the light.

Your provider pulses the laser light on and off using different wavelengths to trigger natural healing responses in the light-sensitive cells in your joints and soft tissues. Each pulse of light lasts a few seconds, and your provider moves the handheld device over the entire treatment area during the procedure, which takes less than 10 minutes. Multiple sessions may be recommended depending on your diagnosis.
